I am a program evaluator with a long history of evaluation and research work in the fields of science and marine education, informal learning and K-12 and university-level education. I am passionate about learning how people come to understand and care for the natural world around them, especially the marine world. Associate Professor of Education
I study how and why people learn about science and technology — and how it relates to what they want or need to accomplish in their lives. I am a Co-PI of the COSEE-OLC center. As someone who works in the learning sciences field, I’ve studied everyday learning, cognition and expertise in science; children's argumentation; the use of digital technologies within youth culture; the design and use of novel learning technologies; and new approaches to inquiry instruction in science. I direct the ethnographic and design-based research of the Everyday Science and Technology Group.

Rachel Benbrook

Rachel Benbrook is working on building a network of volunteer sea kayakers and involving them in citizen science in Puget Sound.

Sea Kayaking Biologist
I am a 10 year resident of Puget Sound, currently living on Guemes Island. I coordinate the Spartina Survey Program for People For Puget Sound. We recruit and train volunteer sea kayakers to survey the shorelines of Puget Sound for invasive Spartina grass. I am looking for ways to build a network of citizen science volunteer kayakers and connect them with researchers that are doing good work for the Sound.

Amanda Bruner

Amanda Bruner earned her Master of Science from the University of Washington's School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences in 2010. Her thesis work described the effects of a common aquatic contaminant on the development and reproduction in the threespine stickleback fish. Amanda is a founding member of the University of Washington's student chapter of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science and was a NSF GK-12 teaching fellow in the Ocean And Coastal Integrated Science GK-12 Program from 2008-2010. In addition to her work in biology, Amanda's graduate work included the development and assessment of culturally responsive environmental science curricular materials.

I am the operations manager for the COSEE-Ocean Learning Communities. I have a background in the social sciences and have taught in both formal and informal educational settings. More recently I worked as an educator at the Seattle Aquarium and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. I have had the pleasure of working as a leader with the Seattle Aquarium's Beach Naturalist program over the past four summers.

I am the Interpretive Specialist for Lime Kiln Point State Park, San Juan Island. My position requires me to wear many 'hats'... volunteer program coordinator (recruiting, training, managing), natural and cultural history program development/tours (intertidal, lighthouse, whale talks, lime kilns...), Interpretive Center/gift shop manager, well, the list can go on. I love what I do and the people I work with... feels more like family than anything!
