High School Students Tackle Water Quality Issues

Earlier today, I headed over to the University of Washington campus so high school students could teach me all about water quality problems facing the Puget Sound region. The event showcased projects the students themselves had chosen to research and test as part of their science classes at three Seattle high schools. Three local organizations put on the event: the Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence, the University of Washington’s GK12 teaching fellowship program, and SoundCitizen.

Broaden Your Impact

COSEE NOW invites you to participate in an online seminar (webinar) series that will discuss how to approach NSF’s broader impacts requirements in proposals, including how to generate novel ideas for broader impacts activities, how to implement broader impacts activities, and how to measure their impact.

Internal Wave Chasing in the South China Sea

This is a random account - part science, part fun, part silliness - of our August 2010 voyage on R/V Revelle to Taiwan and the Philippines to study my favorite ocean phenomena - INTERNAL WAVES, which are hundreds of meters high, travel across the world oceans, break just like waves on beaches, and take enough energy and heat with them to affect the Earth’s climate!

Exploring the Kermadec volcanic arc

The University of Washington School of Oceanography's undergraduate senior thesis research cruise is happening now! From March 2 to March 12 this class will be aboard the R/V Thompson exploring the Kermadec volcanic arc which extends to the northeast of New Zealand. The tectonic activity in this region is associated with hydrothermal vents that are unique in their chemical composition and can reach into relatively shallow water (500m and less) of the ocean.
